SYNOPSIS
A Shabbat meal turns into a nightmare when a violent squabble breaks out between Nico and his sister Rachel. Torn between their religious and cultural origins, the characters ultimately share a single goal: to preserve what’s left of their heritage. Part horror thriller, part family comedy, Friday Night explores the complexities of cultural mixing in the midst of a Montreal winter.

Director's Notes
After Opération Carcajou, a short film in which my family and I were the protagonists, I wanted to continue this autofiction approach with Friday Night. As if we were meeting the same characters 15 years later, the film deals with the impact left by the father on his two children. I wanted to address the complex relationship my sister and I have with our identity, Judaism being as much cultural as religious, all bathed in the cold Quebec winter. Many non-practicing people like us claim their Jewish identity, and everyone has their own interpretation of Jewishness. I wanted to put this idea at the heart of a generous film, full of humor and twists and turns, reflecting the vivid, intense emotions typical of Mediterranean Jews.
BIOGRAPHY
Born to a Jewish Tunisian father and a Quebecois mother, Nicolas Krief is the result of an unexpected cultural and genetic mix. A screenwriter and passionate cinephile, he wrote several projects released in 2020, including the series Les Fleuristes, as well as Jusqu’au déclin, the first Quebec feature film produced for Netflix. In 2022, he released his second feature as co-writer: Très Belle Journée, the first Quebec film shot entirely on a cell phone. The themes of identity blending, cultural heritage and filiation are dear to the author, who is currently working on several horror film projects (Visite Libre, La Clinique), TV series, and a feature-length adaptation of his short film Opération Carcajou, released in 2021.
