Director's Notes

The Cove was born from the persistent memory of a wild beach, where I used to go swimming as a child, and behind which was hidden a mysterious cove. The dark and deep water of this arm of the lake repelled and attracted me at the same time. The sun hardly broke through the canopy of trees, which muffled the sounds. It was a place where anything could happen.

The story of 11-year-old Claudia, helpless in the face of the adult world, also came to mind as a memory, and that’s how I treated it, but without locking the plot to a specific period. I want to immerse you in your own memories.

To accompany the character’s transformation and to bring to life the sharpness of awakening adolescence, I imbued the film with warmth and sensuality. The senses lazily capture the light and the soft roughness of the sand. The adults’ languor and the innocent games between cousins are wrapped in aquatic sounds. Like a day at the beach.
